The Importance of Intergenerational Play

by Janai Richards, Be Fit for Life, Lethbridge Polytechnic

It may feel like “time is slipping away” with our modern world and the fast pace of life we face daily, although it is time to reframe the mind to be present and enjoy our time spent together. A bond between a grandparent and grandchild is special and irreplaceable, making this relationship valuable to foster. A great way to connect with one another is through intergenerational play. Board games can spark friendly competition and strategic thinking, while arts and crafts encourage creativity and self-expression. Puzzles promote teamwork and problem-solving, and storytelling fosters communication and imagination. Outdoor activities provide opportunities for physical engagement and exploration, enhancing both health and happiness.

Benefits Intergenerational Play has on Children

  • Intergenerational play impacts all five developmental domains, allowing for a strong foundation for holistic development.

  • Improves cognitive development through strategic planning, memory recall, and the ability to anticipate outcomes.

  • Social skills advance by learning to communicate and listen attentively as well as respecting different perspectives.

  • Children develop higher levels of language and problem-solving skills.

  • Through intergeneration play children feel safe, secured, important, and cared for.

Benefits Intergenerational Play has on Older Adults

  • Older adults improve in cognitive health through maintaining memory and problem-solving skills.

  • Physically older adults can improve their muscle tone, coordination, and reaction time.

  • Older adults who incorporate intergenerational play into their lives report increased mood, diminished anxiety, a sense of purpose, and reduced feelings of loneliness or isolation.

Overcoming the Barriers

Even though we may face intergenerational separation due to parents having children later in life, living greater distances between one another, or differences in physical and cognitive functioning it is crucial we incorporate and encourage the importance of intergenerational play. In doing so we can create lasting memories and deepen relationships, all while enjoying the present moments.
